A pair in poker is a five-card hand containing two cards of the same rank plus three unrelated cards (kickers). For example, K♠ K♦ 9♣ 6♥ 2♠ is a pair of kings with a nine, six and two as kickers. Because Hold’em has community cards, “a pair” comes in several flavours. Knowing which one you have changes how you should play the hand.

• You are dealt a pocket pair about 6 percent of the time, or once every 17 hands.
• You will make two pair by the river around 23 to 24 percent of the time. Flopping two pair with two unpaired cards is about 2 percent.
