$320 Million, the Best-Paid “Day Job” in Crypto History

On Sunday, someone walked into Liquid Network’s federation wallet, the Bitcoin sidechain built by Blockstream, and pulled out nearly 4,000 BTC. At the time, that was worth roughly $320 million. And not through brute force either, but through a bug in the Elements software, specifically a flaw in the range-proof verification cache that let the attacker mint fake L-BTC tokens the system accepted as real.

Standard playbook from here? Panic, shut everything down, lawyers, headlines. But this is where the story stops being just another hack.

The attacker identified themselves as a “white hat” and instead of vanishing into the blockchain with the loot, they started… negotiating. Not on Telegram. Not in a DM. Directly inside Bitcoin transactions, PGP-signed, for anyone to read. Blockstream replied the same way. A fully public, permanently on-chain negotiation, possibly the most transparent ransom talk in the history of finance.

The deal was simple: Blockstream patches the vulnerability, confirms the bridge nodes are safe, and the attacker sends the money back.

And here’s the punchline: they returned 3,400 BTC (worth about $268 million today). They kept 598.5 BTC, around $47 million, as a self-appointed “bug bounty.” Nobody has confirmed this was formally agreed. They just took 15% and called it a day.

Sit with that for a second. Someone had one very good, very questionable (depending how you look at it) day at the office and set themselves up for generations. Meanwhile the rest of us spent that same Sunday answering emails and checking our bank balance before payday.

Liquid is still paused while operators clean up a chain split and restore full 1:1 L-BTC backing before flipping the switch back on. So the epilogue is still being written.
