Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP Memecoin: Facts Before Launch Day

Written September 8, 2026, one day before the announced launch

Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, has announced plans to launch a memecoin called LAPTOP on September 9, 2026. The name references the laptop controversy that became a major story during the 2020 election cycle. As of the writing of this post, the token has not yet launched. Everything below reflects what has been officially announced or reported by named sources, with links included so readers can verify directly.

The Announcement

Hunter Biden posted the ticker and launch date, September 9, on his verified X account on Monday, September 7, alongside a short video referencing the original laptop story. The Wall Street Journal reported the same day that Biden was part of the project’s founding team, citing people familiar with the plans. The launch is set for the Base network, the layer two blockchain built and operated by Coinbase. Forbes and The Hill both independently confirmed the September 9 date and the Base network in their own reporting.

Official Tokenomics

According to the project’s own website, as reported by CryptoTimes and UseTheBitcoin, LAPTOP has a fixed supply of one billion tokens split as follows: thirty percent to founders, thirty percent tied to a prediction system linked to political, crypto, and cultural outcomes, twenty percent to airdrops, ten percent to liquidity, five percent to a foundation treasury, and five percent to charity. Under the prediction mechanism, tokens tied to outcomes that occur are burned, while tokens tied to outcomes that do not occur are redirected to charity. Listed outcomes reportedly include whether a Democrat wins the 2028 presidential election, whether bitcoin sets a new all time high, and whether LAPTOP’s fully diluted valuation exceeds that of TRUMP. Note that this official breakdown differs slightly from the earlier Wall Street Journal figures, which described a thirty percent founder allocation, a twenty percent airdrop, up to thirty percent tied to burns or charity, and a remaining twenty percent for charity, market makers, and compliance costs. Readers should treat the project’s own published tokenomics as the more current figure and watch for further updates before launch.

The airdrop is reportedly split between three groups: wallets that lost money trading the TRUMP token, subscribers to Hunter Biden’s Substack newsletter who joined before September 6, and subscribers to Andrew Callaghan’s Channel 5 mailing list who joined before August 21. Callaghan’s company has publicly stated he has no involvement in the LAPTOP project itself and that Biden is only using a mailing list they provide.

Copycat Token Warning

Multiple outlets, including CryptoTimes and UseTheBitcoin, report that the project has published an official Base contract address on its own website, though addresses like this are easy to fake and should always be checked directly on the official site rather than trusted from a news article or social post. As of September 7, at least fourteen unrelated tokens using the LAPTOP name appeared across Robinhood Chain, Solana, TON, and BNB Chain within about an hour of the news breaking, generating a combined 6.9 million dollars in trading volume according to DEX Screener data cited by CryptoTimes. None of these are affiliated with the official project. Anyone considering this token should verify the contract address directly against the official project website before transacting, and should treat any token trading before the confirmed launch date as unverified.

The Trump and Melania Precedent

LAPTOP’s airdrop is explicitly aimed at wallets that lost money on TRUMP, so the performance of that token and of Melania Trump’s MELANIA token is directly relevant context. Both launched in January 2025 around the presidential inauguration. TRUMP peaked at 75.35 dollars on January 19, 2025, with a market cap of 14.5 billion dollars. MELANIA peaked at 13.73 dollars around the same period. By February 2026, blockchain analytics firm CryptoRank reported that TRUMP had fallen 92 percent from its peak to 3.55 dollars, while MELANIA had fallen 99 percent to 0.11 dollars. CryptoRank estimated that roughly two million retail wallets were holding underwater positions at that point, with combined retail losses of about 4.3 billion dollars, while a small number of early wallets had gained roughly 1.2 billion dollars combined. As of this writing, CoinMarketCap lists MELANIA trading at roughly 0.11 dollars with a live market cap near 112 million dollars, consistent with the CryptoRank figures.

This same pattern already played out around the Trump and Melania launches, and it is directly relevant to LAPTOP. Blockchain security firm Blockaid found that within forty eight hours of the TRUMP launch, the number of tokens using the Trump name jumped 206 percent, from about 3,300 to 6,800, as scammers rushed to exploit the buying frenzy. Blockaid also found that fake tokens referencing other Trump family names, including Melania and Barron, surged hundreds of percent in the same window, creating what the firm called the illusion of an interconnected ecosystem despite having no real connection to the family. Separately, in February 2025 a hacked World Liberty Financial account was used to promote a fake BARRON token, which reportedly kept trading even after the scam was publicly exposed. Given that LAPTOP has already drawn more than a dozen copycat tokens across several chains before its own launch has even happened, the same risk applies here. Treat any LAPTOP branded token as unverified until it is confirmed directly against the official project website, and be especially wary of pages offering early access, presales, compensation for TRUMP losses, or wallet connection requests tied to any of these tokens.

Why This Matters

The TRUMP and MELANIA data give a concrete, sourced picture of how political memecoins have performed after launch so far: a sharp initial spike followed by a prolonged, deep decline, with early insiders capturing gains that retail buyers largely did not. LAPTOP is explicitly positioning part of its own launch around that history. None of this is investment advice, and none of it guarantees LAPTOP will follow the same pattern. The point of laying out the confirmed numbers is to give readers real data points rather than speculation ahead of a launch that, as of this writing, has not yet happened.
