Provably Fair Gambling: What Does It Really Mean?

Updated: 27 October 2026
Crypto casinos changed online gambling by reducing how much you have to trust the operator. The tool behind that change is provably fair: a method that lets you check, after the fact, that a result was not changed once you placed your bet.
This guide explains what provably fair means, how Wolfbet implements it, how to verify a dice bet yourself, and what the system does not protect you from.

What provably fair means
Provably fair is a method for proving that an outcome was generated fairly. It relies on a cryptographic hash, which is a fixed-length fingerprint of a value. You cannot work backwards from the fingerprint to the value, and changing the value changes the fingerprint completely.
A casino uses that property to commit to a secret before you bet. If it later reveals the secret and the secret matches the fingerprint it showed you earlier, the casino could not have changed the secret in the meantime.
The three building blocks
Wolfbet’s system uses three values.
- Server seed. A secret generated by Wolfbet. Before you bet, you see only its hash, which is the fingerprint.
- Client seed. A value you control. You can change it at any time, so the casino cannot predict your results.
- Nonce. A counter that increases by one with every bet. It resets to zero when the server seed changes.
Each roll is calculated from all three values together. You hold the client seed and the casino holds the server seed, so neither side can work out the outcome alone in advance.

Overview tab: the server seed is shared as a hash, the client seed is yours, and the nonce counts your bets.
Where to find your seeds on Wolfbet
Open the Provably Fair page and go to the Session tab. It shows three things:
- your current client seed,
- your current server seed, shown as a hash,
- your nonce, the number of bets made with the current seed pair.
Each seed has a Change button. Changing the server seed reveals the old seed, so you can verify the bets it produced, and starts a new one. Use it when you want to check a finished session.

Session tab: the hashed server seed, your client seed and the nonce.
How Wolfbet calculates a dice roll
Wolfbet documents the dice calculation on its Provably Fair page. The steps are:
- Combine the values. Compute HMAC-SHA256 with the server seed as the key, and the message
clientSeed_nonce, where the client seed and the nonce are joined by an underscore. The output is a 64-character hexadecimal string. - Read five characters. Take the first five hex characters and convert them to a number from 0 to 1,048,575.
- Retry if needed. If that number is 1,000,000 or higher, take the next five characters and try again, skipping the characters you already used. Repeat until you get a number below 1,000,000. In the extremely unlikely case that every chunk is too high, Wolfbet uses 99.99.
- Turn it into a roll. Take the number modulo 10,000, then divide by 100. The result is a roll from 0.00 to 99.99.
The same logic in JavaScript, as Wolfbet publishes it:

Implementation tab: the dice algorithm and the verification code.
Two worked examples
Example 1: the first chunk is valid. Suppose the HMAC output begins with 9e8f7. That is 649,463 in decimal, below 1,000,000, so no retry is needed. 649,463 modulo 10,000 is 9,463. Divide by 100 and you get 94.63.
Example 2: the first chunk is too high. Suppose the output begins with fffff00a1b. The first chunk, fffff, is 1,048,575, which is too high. The next chunk, 00a1b, is 2,587, which is valid. 2,587 divided by 100 gives 25.87.
How to check a dice bet yourself
- Finish the session, or open the bet in your history, and note the nonce of the bet you want to check.
- In the Session tab, reveal the server seed by generating a new one, and copy the old seed.
- Check that the revealed seed hashes to the value you were shown before the bets.
- Open the Verification tab, select Dice, and enter the client seed, the nonce and the server seed.

Verification tab: enter the three values and compare the result on the slider with your bet history.
- Compare the result on the slider with the roll in your bet history.
If the hashes match and the result matches, the bet was calculated as Wolfbet documents. If either check fails, keep your records and contact support before you deposit again.
Cross-check with a third-party verifier
You can also check a bet with an independent tool. BTCGOSU’s Provably Fair Verifier supports Wolfbet Casino among many other platforms. Pick the casino, choose the game, and enter the server seed, client seed and nonce. If the result matches the casino’s, the bet was calculated the way the casino says.

Why provably fair matters for players
Players want to test a claim, not just read it. A provably fair system lets you check each result against the commitment the casino made before you bet.
Most platforms show their provably fair status on the homepage, in the footer or in the FAQ. Wolfbet publishes the full dice algorithm on its Provably Fair page, which makes it possible to check the calculation yourself. If a platform cannot show you how its results are calculated, treat that as a warning.
What provably fair does not cover
Provably fair proves that outcomes were calculated fairly. It does not protect you from everything else.
- A casino can still delay or block withdrawals.
- Winnings can go uncredited, which is hard to notice when you use auto-bet.
- Smaller or new casinos can close accounts for any reason.
For these reasons, check a platform’s reputation and withdrawal history as well as its fairness. Search for scam reports and read independent reviews.
Conclusion
Provably fair lets you check that each roll was calculated the way the casino documented before you bet. It is a strong signal of fairness, but not a guarantee of withdrawals or profit.
